We’re speeding through life.
Literally.
Each of us on the surface of this plant are hurtling through space at about 66,000 miles per hour… and our minds are doing their best to keep pace… as our minds race through life thinking between SIXTY and EIGHTY THOUSAND thoughts EVERY DAY!
And in today’s day and age, we have leveraged that mental processing speed more than ever, so that we are innovating, creating, and learning more, and faster, than we have EV ER, in the history of humanity.
We also have technology (mobile phones, mobile apps, wireless connectivity) that enables us to stay more plugged in, be more productive, keep track of more things, and get more done every day.
On top of all of that… and as if that weren’t enough… the most popular self-help categories are books, articles, and talks on productivity, efficiency, time management, organization, and success.
So then why in the world do we seem to be LESS satisfied, LESS fulfilled, and MORE stressed, worried, and filled with anxiety than ever?
How come no one, collectively, seems to be slowing down enough to really be with the question…
“WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON HERE?”We’re pointed toward the edge of a cliff, picking up speed, and seeking out resources that will help us get there faster!
When we watch the news, think about world and national politics, big systems that we live our lives inside of (aka. the big picture) it seems hopeless. The world, the collective, is on a collision course.
BUT…
We DO have a choice.
YOU… HAVE A CHOICE.
WHAT choice is that?
Channel your inner rebel… buck the system and the trend… and SLOW DOWN.
This one thing will, over time, make a massive difference in your relationships, job, career, recreation, alone time, and in your thinking.
You could pick any way to do this…
Slow yourself down at work by taking a 10 deep breath break every 30 minutes.
Slow down before you walk in the door of your home - take a 2 minute deep breathing pause to reset your internal energy from work mode to home mode.
Slow down in your morning routine by holding off looking at your phone or watching the news by at least 1 hour.
And… by the way… your doing this makes a difference in the ongoing evolution of the collective. You know, the one I was referring to above that is on a collision course toward the edge of the cliff.
The collective is made up of individual people like you and me.
The collective moves based on individual choices that each of us make. And every single one of us counts, and matters.
When you make a change to the way you act and think, it may feel insignificant in context of the world.
But it’s not.
It is the only way things start to change - one person at a time.
Remember Margaret Mead’s words, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it's the only thing that ever has.”
I might modify it just a little…
“Never doubt that YOU, and the singular changes you make to the thoughts you think, feelings you feel, and choices you make, can change the world. In fact, it’s the only thing that ever has.
You matter. You make a difference.
Now… start steering yourself away from the edge of that cliff… and slow down… because you can… and it makes a difference!

Andy

Well timed post. I've been adding some more meditation to my life, and starting my day with 10 minutes of silent meditation (sitting on a pillow with my back against a wall for support) and 10 minutes of guided meditation (I'm enjoying the "First, This" meditation podcast) - and I really appreciate the idea of how accessible enjoying the present moment can be - 10 breaths every 30 minutes seems doable - and maybe I need to wiggle my toes and be where my feet are, thinking about what I perceive at this moment. Great stuff as always, Andy!
