There’s more to the morning hot beverage story: FAT
Part 1: MCT OIL
Last week, I told you about my coffee replacement experiment and new love of matcha. However, I left out the part of the experiment that makes it work for me… the addition of healthy sources of fat, and now protein. Let me explain.
I really like the way my body feels when I’m intermittent fasting. I’ve been doing it now for years, skipping breakfast consistently in favor of a couple of hot cups of coffee. When coffee was my morning beverage choice, I would add a tablespoon of butter plus a tablespoon of MCT oil to each cup.
In my new matcha and mushroom morning routine, I am continuing with this… adding at least 1 tablespoon of MCT oil to both drinks. Here is a link to the brand I use - MiCkey T Eight, Pure C8 MCT oil in case you’d like to give it a try.
By the way, WHY fat? For the (not so) obvious benefits like sustaining and prolonging your energy levels, neutralizing stomach acidity, improving digestion and healing the gut by reducing inflammation, balancing insulin and helping to maintain blood sugar levels.
Part 2: Almond Milk
I also told you last week that I add almond milk to my matcha. A few years ago, when my wife started regularly making shakes with almond milk, we found ourselves buying 2-3 quarts per week. We struggled to find a brand that wasn’t laden with additives and preservatives, and when we finally settled on one, realized that our weekly almond milk purchases were costing us $15-20 per WEEK.
Julia had no interest in complicating or adding work to her morning routine, but we HAD to do something. There HAD to be a better way!
I searched for a simple way to make almond milk… and low and behold… found THIS almond milk maker on Amazon. It was the ANSWER we were looking for. Soak a cup of almonds for a couple of hours, put it into the machine with water, press the grind button, and about 2 minutes later… pure, natural, ALMOND MILK! It’s quick, easy, cleans like a dream, and saves us a ton of money.
And now that I am also drinking almond milk every day, we’ve upped the quantity we make, and it’s a full-on family affair! I highly recommend giving it a shot yourself.
And there’s even more… PROTEIN
Because I intermittent fast by skipping breakfast each day, I struggle to ingest the amount of protein I need for proper muscle maintenance and growth (my nutritionist recommends 1 gram per pound of body weight per day, which for me means about 150 g). So I’m trying another new experiment.
Although technically, adding anything but fat to my morning drinks breaks my fast… I believe that getting in enough protein is a worthy enough objective for longevity to perhaps give up the benefits of fasting.
So I picked up a new (for me) type of protein powder, Grass Fed Beef Bone Broth Protein Powder, and I’m adding a scoop of it to my BeyondBrew mushroom drink. It delivers 20 grams of protein to my daily intake, and in my morning brew, it’s actually quite delicious!
Quotes I’m Pondering
“When you have your game all together, and there’s still a yearning inside of you, and you say ‘I don’t understand why I’m still unhappy, I’ve got it all.’ Well, that yearning is your ticket to spiritual awakening.”
~ Ram Dass
“Discipline is a bad word in our culture. People associate it with having to do what they're told. But discipline is quite a lovely word. It comes from the same root as disciple, and it means seeing yourself through the eyes of the teacher who loves you.”
~ Marion Woodman
That’s all for now. Have a great week!
- Andy
Thanks for the tip on the milk maker. I have a lot of coconut meat in the freezer that I bet I could use that for. Also, the Marion Woodman quote is a great one to ponder.
